How the devastating Campbellton fire of 1910 became a Maritime folk ballad about a town losing nearly everything except the community that would rebuild it.
WRITING THE SONG
The Fire Took the Town began with a historical event that still sits underneath the identity of Campbellton, New Brunswick.
On July 11, 1910, a major fire swept through Campbellton. Contemporary and later accounts describe a hot, windy afternoon in which the blaze spread rapidly through a town where wood buildings, lumber and industrial activity made fire especially dangerous.
Much of Campbellton was destroyed.
But the part of the story that made it feel like a song was not simply the scale of the destruction.
It was what happened afterward.
Thousands of residents were suddenly without homes, yet the town survived and rebuilt. That suggested a much stronger emotional centre than simply cataloguing buildings that burned.
The idea became: the fire could destroy the town that existed that morning, but it could not destroy the people who called it home.
That is why The Fire Took the Town is written less like a disaster report and more like a community ballad.
The fire provides the dramatic event, but the song ultimately belongs to the people standing in the ruins afterward.
That approach also fit Orpheus Shade, whose music often takes real disasters, shipwrecks, legends and Maritime history and turns them into narrative songs rather than straightforward historical summaries.
The arrangement was designed as a Maritime historical folk ballad. The music needed enough weight to carry the destruction of the fire, but it also needed warmth. If the production had remained entirely grim, it would have missed the point of the story.
The central contrast is therefore between destruction and endurance: a town disappears in hours; a community does not.
That is the meaning behind the title The Fire Took the Town.
It describes what the fire managed to take — and, indirectly, what it could not.
